Flying with Kids

We just spent ten days travelling with our kids visiting family in Utah (pix and details to follow soon). Going on trips with children presents unique challenges, but I've decided I love flying with Lucy and Gavin. Take our most recent flying adventure for example.

The flight from Salt Lake to Chicago was in one of those little commuter jets that seem to be all we fly in these days. You know, the kind that bounce all over the sky whenever they meet the slightest air disturbance. Well, we hit some MAJOR turbulence along the way -- I HATE turbulence so I just sat there with my fists, teeth and eyelids clenched, until I heard some laughing and looked over and realized that Lucy and Gavin were having a GREAT time! Every time they felt one of those stomach-turning drops they cheered and burst into giggles like they were on an amusement park ride or something! It's hard to concentrate on the fact that scientists can't explain how planes stay up when my kids are loving every bounce, jolt and jiggle.

We made it to Chicago and sat through our layover. Just when the time came to begin boarding, they announced that the flight had been cancelled. Last flight of the day, of course. After some frantic and somewhat desperate arrangements, we broke it to the kids that we'd be staying in Chicago for the night and flying home through La Guardia in the morning. Of course, they were THRILLED. Who wouldn't be?

Lucy: Hey, does that mean we get to stay in a HOTEL?!? Awesome! This is the best day of my life!

Gavin: That means we get to ride on TWO more airplanes not just ONE! And we get to go New York! Will we see Sam and Heather's house when we fly over? This is great!

Actually, things worked out pretty well. This morning we volunteered to get bumped on the Chicago - La Guardia leg (we took a flight just an hour later and caught our same connection to Burlington) and came home with four ticket vouchers. So we'll be flying with the kids again sooner than we thought. Can't wait.
