The Big 4-2

I was hoping we could plan a big family adventure for Austin's 42nd birthday, but it turned out he had to go to work. Bummer. But the kids were determined that he would have a fabulous birthday party complete with a "theme" so they worked all day creating a Basketball Party for Austin's special day.

There were basketball-themed decorations, balloons colored to look like basketballs, and all the basketballs in the house mustered for use as props. They wrote a song to perform and searched iTunes for a basketball song they could dance to. And the piece de resistance . . .

Tickets to a fantasy basketball game between BYU and Norwich!

Austin wanted an angel food cake with berries for his birthday.

We couldn't wish for a better husband and dad than you are, Austin!

Friends Campout 2012

Our friends were kind enough to let us host this year's annual Friends Campout here in Vermont. One thing that's nice about camping at our house (aside from us not having to pack or drive anywhere) is that we get the fun of sleeping in tents but the convenience of real bathrooms and a kitchen.

Thanks for taking this picture, Jeanne,
so I could be in one!
Two new campers: Millie and Axel.
All our kids look remarkably similar!
Boating . . .
Swimming . . .
Riding the ponies . . .
Playing in the mud . . .
Gavin's "mud-stache"
Ultimate Frisbee games  . . .

It was a truly fabulous weekend. Can't wait for next year!

Glacier National Park

Glacier is one of those places that isn't on the way to anywhere. It's WAAAAY up in northwestern Montana, straddling the Canadian border. But when we realized that it was only an hour from Flathead Lake, we decided to make a daytrip. It was SO worth it.

We decided to drive something called "The Road to the Sun" which looked pretty do-able on the park map. We couldn't figure out why it had that name until we started climbing in elevation and realized that if we kept going we might actually reach the sun. The road was narrow and our vehicle (Dad's Suburban) was huge. I kept staring straight ahead to avoid thinking about how close we were to the edge of the road, and hence the edge of the cliff. Luckily, looking straight ahead the views were breathtaking so there was plenty to distract me.

See that line? It's the road.
Looking out, but not down.

Baby Ethan on the rocks.

The kids were angels.

If you ever find yourself in northern Montana with some spare time, I highly recommend Glacier. Unless you are afraid of heights.

Flathead Lake

Christina and Bret rented a huge house on Flathead Lake, Montana for a week, and invited us all up to help them fill it. My mom, brothers Dave and Dylan, sister Rosalie, and their families were all there, along with Christina and Bret's friends the Wanderers and some assorted friends of Bret's kids. Somehow, room was found for everybody, and we all had a great time together. I took 250 pictures (well, I took many more than that, but I ended up with 250 "favorite" pictures). This is a very small sampling of the pictures I took and the fun we had.

Group shot, minus me. I should get a tripod.
Cousins.
Lucy is a natural at the Stand-Up Paddleboard.

She tried to teach me.

Austin is pretty good.
We may need to get one of these.

Jumping off the dock.

Ready for a swim.
Gavin learned to waterski.
Austin remembered how to waterski.
Lucy loved the tube.
Gavin loved riding in the boat.
This bald eagle watched us for about an hour one day.
Exhausted and happy.

Old Friends

Usually our trips West are so full of family events we don't have time for anything else. But this time, we found ourselves with a spare day and decided to visit some dear friends we haven't seen in a long time.

We stopped in at the Herlevis to visit Rick and Kelli and their family. Austin and Rick were high school buddies, Austin and Kelli were college friends, and both give Austin credit for getting them together. We had a wonderful time catching up and getting to know their children.

I have a feeling we are going to need this photo to prove that we knew the Herlevi girls before they were famous! While Rick whisked Austin off to admire his Land Rover restoration, his daughters got out a fiddle and guitar and sang with us. They were awesome. Serious talent in this family.

Then we went to dinner at the Drinkwaters. Pete and Austin were friends on their mission and stayed close in college. Pete and Mary and their kids are such a blast. Next time we are going to have to plan more time with these guys.

Gavin lost a tooth that day so, not to be outdone, Pete's son yanked his loose tooth out so we would have matching gap-toothed boys. The tooth fairy was busy that night!

Lucy climbed a tree with one of Pete's daughters, then found herself stuck like a kitten, unable to get down. She made a good-faith effort, then Pete came to the rescue. (Thanks.)

Finally, I can't leave out a visit with a real OLD friend. My first best friend, my grandpa, now well into his nineties. He was still as energetic and full of great stories as ever. This visit, we learned a bit more about his military career -- especially interesting to me now that I teach at a military university. We didn't even come close to exhausting those stories so we will have to come back next time for more.

Cousin-Palooza

Austin's parents have fourteen grandchildren. Nine of them are currently between the ages of 5 and 10. So when we visit Utah, Lucy and Gavin are in serious cousin heaven. We spent five days hanging out with Austin's siblings and our wonderful nieces and nephews. I can't imagine anything more fun.
